Trent,
How are things going? I just accepted a high teaching job in Lyndonville Vermont. they do some money for artist clinics etc.
What would you need for a day at my high school? There would be a master class during the day and one after school for areas schools. A night perfrmance backed b a high combo ,and also an area adult big band. We would also have a place for you to stay for free if you want. We are about 2 hours and 20 minutes from Salem N.H (Bruce Lee's old apartment).

Hi, Trent: You were kind enough to let me try a 3C Wedge at USM early in the spring.
You mentiioned on Trumpet Herald site that you might be selling some MPs soon. If they should include a Wedge, I'd definitely be interested.

Cheers,

Hey Trent,

I'm really wanting to go back to school and major in jazz trumpet. However, I don't think its feasible without a full ride. I really need some advice on putting together an audition tape for multiple schools.
I'm 31 years old and just did 10 years in the Army band and I really want to play for a living. Currently living in Houston, and I want to go to school in the Northeast.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nathan

04.14.08 | Richard Mason
I see that you have another Z for sale. I bought one from your years ago that you had used on an Artie Shaw South American tour. I have a horn that I like even better, i.e. Vega Power Specialist. I use it as my main horn playing around Denver these days. A few guys in Denver are still big fans of the Z horns. Greg Gisbert is still playing a Z, but Pete Olstad has switched to a Schilke B6.

What are you using for a mouthpiece these days? I have an ancient Giardinelli 12S that I got from Pete Olstad that works extremely well for me. I also like a Curry 10.5XS, and GR 62SZ. Mark Curry has a superb cup on the 10.5XS.

I looked at your performance schedule. Do you ever get out to the wild west? Let me know if you do.

Richard Mason

Hey Trent. my name is Tor Johannessen. i was at the Newburyport High School on3/25/08. I am the kid who had the piccolo trumpet. i was wondering if there is any tips you can give me to be able to reach higher notes on the picc tumpet.i got the trumpet for christmas so i am fairly new to it. my teacher Tom Horan is amazed because i can sort of play the solo in 'PENNY LANE' by the Beatles. some of the songs i really want to be able to play is the Brandenburg Concerto and Canon in D. it is not very often that i come across a piccolo trumpeter, so if you could give me any tips and pointers for it that would be great.

Thank you very much for the clinic at NHS. that was an awsome concert.

Trent,

Are you available to play a wedding reception on October 11 2008 from 4:00-9:00 in Hartford CT? We're looking for a small combo group.

If so, would you mind sending any pricing/contract information? I'd love to have a fellow TPINer, especially one of your caliber, involved with the wedding.

Thanks, Trent.

03.12.08 | John Miconi
Hey Trent...as I elluded to on the Trumpet Herald, you sound fantastic on the Sonare/Wedge combination. Currently I am playing on a Kanstul 1070 lge bore horn, but I am very curious about the Sonare trumpets. I know you have written alot of the threads on TH and TM about the Sonare trumpets that I was just looking for some ore insight on these instruments. I tried a Sonare 800 series horn that I really did not care for. How does the Sonare 900 dffer in sound, blow resistance, etc, with the 800? I am really digging your sound, and really thinking about giving these horns a test drive.

Thanks,

Trent you are awesome... Great to know about you. Your website communicicates your talent.

03.07.08 | Grant Gilbert
Hi Trent,
I'm the one that had the idea for the QM backbore! I noticed that you are using it. How do you like it? I have a lot of backbores, but I don't seem to want to play anything but the QM! A lot of people are starting to try it, and I haven't heard of anyone that didn't like it.
I am an amatuer player and a senior. I also use a Wedge modified from a MP like I had already been playing that I was very happy with. Your playing is great. I'm sure it takes a lot of practice to play like that. If I wasn't on limited income, I would take lessons from you!
Best Wishes to you,
Grant Gilbert

Hey man, when are you going to get back out to western NY? I am dying for some good ole jazz. By the way, my 3 year old told me last night "Daddy, you know that trumpet music is my favorite music, right?" If you can't get out here we might have to try and catch you in Portland. I hope that things are going well. Drop a line back when you get a chance.

Hi Trent:

I have a couple equipment questions. Wondering what your impression is of the current Getzen line of horns. I'm considering a new horn, and I'd very much value your opinion. The Yamaha line seems to get much praise of recent (and perhaps deservedly so), but I'd like to buy American.

Also, I've noticed on the TH you've experimented with a number of different mouthpieces. Curious if you've ever tried the GR line. Some folks on the T. Herald love them, some not so much.

Thanks!

Brent

Trent,
You are a joy to listen to. Your chops are from a different planet. Keep making CD"s so everyone can hear you,I'm sure everybody will agree that your playing is as good as it gets. I love the picture with you and CT. CT is my all time favorite person and player. When I was going to Berklee I used to go to Sandy's Jazz Revival and catch his group when he had Chris Woods on alto ,Victor Sprolls on bass , Walter Biship Jr. on piano and Ed Soph on drums. What a smokin group!!!! I had to wait in the train station till morning to get a train back to Boston after his gigs were over , but when he was there I never missed a performance. Please keep up the great playing and teaching !!!!

Hey man. Hope you are well! I'm heading the IAJE clinician program this year and want to see if you'd be interested in doing a clinic on a Tues or Wed from 2:45-4:45 at Wellesley HS. Dear Mr. Austin:

I hope that you are doing well In January 2006, I took my wife and sons to see you and the Artie Shaw Orchestra play at the Macomb Center in Michigan (we were honored to meet Dick in person after the show). My younger son, Eric (now 10) was so impressed with your incredible playing (we all were!) that he decided to switch from drums to trumpet, and he's been taking lessons ever since. I was wondering if it would be possible to do the following:

a. Order your cd's and have you autograph them for Eric.

and

b. Hire you for a long range Internet lession or more to give him some suggestions as to how he can start to develop some jazz chops. His current teacher is teaching him the basics (scales, etc.), but I think it would be great to add some jazz to the mix.

If either or both of these things are possible, please let me know how I can arrange for everything and how I can make payment. I have to say that if either or both of these things is possible, Eric would be on Cloud 9.

Thank you very much, for your consideration and have a good evening,

Mike

HI Trent! Say, have you had any experience with the new B&S JBX trumpet? How would you compare it to the Sonare? Thanks!

11.06.07 | Phil Rich
2 questions -

Do you remember the Bob Mintzer tune you did at Jazz All-State a few years ago?

What do I have to do to get you to Westbrook to do a clinic and/or work with our HS Jazz Band? Maybe be a guest performer with the band on our spring jazz night.?

Hope things are well......thanks!

Phil

10.16.07 | Tim O'Toole
Hey Trent,

I like the updated website! How was playing with Benny Golson? How did you get hooked up with that gig? Must have been amazing!!!

Just curious, you played with Leighanne Jezierski at UNH right? Is she a decent trumpet player? She is the HS band director in my town now. It is a bit too soon, but I will be looking for a trumpet teacher for my son in a few years!

Hope to see you down the road
Tim

Great new website. Hope things are well. How do you like the 993?

09.04.07 | Eric M. Brewington
Hi Trent. I hope this message finds you well. Are you planning to begin your improv "online studio" again or do you take "virtual" students? My practice routine is in dire need of guidance, structure and accountablity. There are some good teachers in the area but the problem is TIME - I get home late from work and most of my available time for practice is in the "wee small hours of the morning/night." Please let me know.

Trent,

Thanks for your kind words and for teaching my son Matt Levine this summer at camp Encore. He is playing beautifully and has made great progress. He mentioned to me that he wanted a new mouthpiece and that you had advised the Schilke? I ordered him a 12B. I hope this is correct. If you think I ordered him the wrong mouthpiece, please let me know. Thanks again. Matt had a great summer.

Sincerely,

Dan Levine
