09.29.08 | New Brandenburg Clip on new equipment setup. Hey everyone!
Here's a raw mp3 clip from offstage of the B'burg performance on Saturday. The conductor got me at the beginning as I wasn't totally prepared for his prep beats (I was thinking he only was giving one). So I chipped out on the G a bit. bummer.
This is on my Schilke P5-4, Osmun new Bb pipe, and Wedge 3C/9* mouthpiece.
Enjoy.

09.22.08 | New sound clip up from "Trumpet Serenade" Okay... so this might be the most double/triple time you've heard on a "ballad" but after a night of mostly lush ballads I thought I'd rip open a very Freddie Hubbard-like version of Body and Soul. I used the Verse to Stardust as a solo intro... we played Stardust (sans the verse) in the first set.
I used my Kanstul 1525 flugel with a Wedge 3 deep cupped mouthpiece. Awesome combo and REALLY easy to play.
Check it out on my listen page... it's a long file so be patient for the download. Cheers!

07.21.08 | New Sound Clip with Markus Stockhausen One of my absolute highlights in my life was sharing the stage with a true musical genius, Markus Stockhausen. Below is a link of a low-fi (Zoom H4) recording we played entitled "Wings" live at the Chosen Vale Trumpet Seminar on June 28th, 2008.
A few nights earlier Markus very graciously invited me to perform a short free improvisation on his solo recital. Being primarily a "chord and Changes" guy I have to say I was a little scared I would step all over his toes. His level of musicianship is off the charts.
Improvising freely is the most intense experience you can imagine. Now imagine it with one of the world's great musicians? wow! Performing with him on stage was incredibly inspiring and humbling. I think he might be the deepest musician I've ever met. Markus is a player who can play any style, any way, and put his personal stamp every moment of performance.
A few days after his solo recital Markus asked Ed if we could do another duo performance on the final Chosen Vale concert. I very happily accepted the request and we decided we'd play our two Kanstul Flugelhorns. There was a bit of theatrical influence on this piece as we started the piece with our backs together and then moved away from each other... playing until we eventually ended up coming back together.
My work with Markus truly changed EVERY aspect of how I improvise. This coming from a session where I didn't really think I'd improvise that much. How cool is that?
Again my hat goes off to my mentor Ed for changing my life yet again!
I hope you enjoy the clip as much as I enjoyed performing with Markus!

Some of the finest trumpeters in the WORLD will be there as well as a tremendous faculty. There are two concerts which are open to the public and WELL worth attending. Just click on the site for more details. I'll be performing some solo improvisations as well as a few baroque concertos (Telemann and Michael Haydn) probably.
Much more to come in July, including another performance at my favorite venue in the world, the Blair Hill Inn (July 23rd with Tom Snow) http://www.blairhill.com
Thanks for reading and keep on keepin' on!
05.12.08 | Private engagements I've recently been inundated with inquiries about my performing schedule in regards to private events. The simple answer is of course I play private events (Weddings, Corporate, and Personal) but I do not put them on my performance calendar. I have recently bought a tremendous PA system and have been doing packages which consist from anything like solo trumpet music, small cocktail and reception music, to full ensemble performances and Disc Jockey work.
If you have a date in mind and enjoy my work, send me a note through my site. I'll be happy to talk with you and your entertainment needs.

04.01.08 | Exciting times Hey Everyone in cyberspace!
Tis the season to be busy... I have had a nice week of vacation (surrounded by a wonderful birthday on Monday watching my new HD direct tv... holy cow I can’t wait for the baseball season to "start"!).
Back to the grind teaching wise but I can’t wait.
I also have a few projects winding up:
I’m recording a duo CD at the end of this month with one of Maine’s hidden treasures, Mr. Gerry Wright. He’s one of the most sensitive and swinging pianists I’ve ever played with. We’ll be doing a bunch from the great American songbook. stay tuned to new clips as we work on the project. It’s slated for a July release (and perhaps a bit later on Itunes).
My solo CD should also be out by then... digital downloads only (even though I can make you a HOMEMADE cd if you’d like.
Speaking of Itunes, I’ve lowered my CD download rates on www.cdbaby.com/trentaustin1 to a very fair price. If you haven’t downloaded a copy (LEGALLY ;) please consider doing so.
I should have a new gig calendar up for the summer soon. Since 80% of my gigs in the summer are Private functions I’ll make sure to give plenty of notice about them when they come in. I’m also looking to fill in a date on July 24th and 25th in Maine/NH either duo (tpt/piano) or quartet.
Oh, yeah... stay tuned to a vocal disc and a Christmas disc coming soon.
Did I mention I was busy?
Peace,
T
03.12.08 | My Wedge Trumpet Mouthpiece experiences Hello trumpet friends in cyberspace:
A lot of people have been asking questions about the Wedge so I thought it was about time I wrote down a brief synopsis of my Wedge experience. There's some old info in this post from numerous sites but I thought it would be good to boil it all down to one generic "testament" to the mouthpieces that really make my playing life fun again.
When I was the height of my "despair" during my recent struggles with allergic reactions to silver and gold and then the subsequent disappointment in every "alternative" design (Lexan, Delrin, wood, platinum, rhodium, aluminum, stainless steel) I sent Dr. Dave an email. We've sold items in the past and I remember how great he was in those transactions. He offered to send me 4 tops for a trial and we were to go from there.
I anxiously waited at my mailbox like a kid staring at the chimney on Christmas Eve. To be honest I really didn't think these pieces were going to help but I was desperate for a solution to my issues (other than switching to piano). After all at this point I had pretty much exhausted every option available. I was at my wits end.
The pieces came really fast in the mail, perhaps in 3 days (Vancouver to Boston, mind you). I opened them up around 9:30 and let played them a bit. Here's what I wrote shortly after:
"With all the buzz about these new pieces, all my recent issues with chop irritation, and me being the epitome of a "gearhead" I just wanted to let people know I ordered a few of these to try out! Even in half-of-a-day (I took the 3CC to my gig this morning, Dave after playing on it for 5 minutes) I'm REALLY pleasantly pleased! So much that my Monette stayed in the case for my gig and I played the Sonare' and 3CC combo!"
I read an article by Dave Bilger saying that if a mouthpiece didn't make an immediate impression (other than on your chops) it probably wasn't for you. After trying to make a bunch of mouthpieces "work" in the past I was a bit on the fence in regards to this. The Wedge really took no time to "acclimate" to. I played a gig a few hours after getting them in the mail. I noticed an instant improvement in response, tone colors, intonation, and of course feel.
My overall spread and sound was a little softer than before but this was a temporary reaction to the new mouthpiece. After a few days I began to realize that these Wedges were changing my playing. The design of the Wedge was making my embouchure and corners especially much greater participants in tone production. I also noticed my sound was getting richer and my projection better. The best part, however, was that the mouthpiece did not make my chops burn. AT ALL! This makes no sense to me, my GP, and my allergist. I told him and he said that if it doesn't hurt to continue to run with it. I have and haven't stopped playing them since then.
Here are (after about about 5-6 months on the pieces) my general observations in my own playing:
1. All of my sound qualities from "conventional" pieces are in the Wedge. Iinitially I struggled with a bit out outward projection but once my chops fully adjusted to the Wedge (a week or so) everything was comparable.
2. My practical range improved by two half steps.
3. . A great aspect of these pieces for me is that I have the exact same range and control on all the cups. What that means is that my overall trumpet feel stays the same but the tone changes. It's really neat that I can put the 3B in and still go up to d's/eb's above DHC (top of my semi-practical range) but the sound/projection changes when I go to the 3C, or 3D. G's and A's are rock solid.
4. No pain (just muscle fatigue due to hours of practicing).
5. Greater control over soft volumes.
6. Greater variety of tonal colors (probably due to the different cups).
7. Switching over to conventional rims (flugel until the Wedge comes out) is very easy.
I can't believe how much fun it is to practice without pain again. The years of thinking I was weak and wimpy are gone. I can't imagine ever putting another mouthpiece up to my chops again. Dr. Dave has really done something new and exciting here. He's also made the joy and passion come back in my playing due to the fact I'm practicing a LOT more now. I owe him so much I don't think I could ever repay him. He's a class act every way. He's really sincere, he listens well, he's open to suggestions, and he seeks out the truth in every player. It's very rare to have makers be all of these things.
Once again, thank you Dr. Dave... you've really made a tremendous impact in my playing, embouchure health, and overall quality of music.
Sincerely,
Trent Austin

12.26.07 | Happy Holidays! Happy holidays everyone! I've been so busy I've neglected my blog. Stay tuned as I'm going to revamp the site a great deal in the next week or so. More sound clips, concert dates, etc.
Ho ho ho to everyone out there and here's to a great New Year!
11.26.07 | Free Live broadcast Wednesday 12-1 (Worcester, MA) Hey guys!
I just found out my gig with the "Gringo Kings" at the beautiful Mechanics Hall (http://www.mechanicshall.org/) is going to be broadcast live on WICN Public radio. The kicker is that you can listen free at the following site below:
http://www.wicn.org/events/brownbag.htm
You should be able to listen to the concert live by clicking a link on that site!
There will be two trumpeters in this cool latin-jazz band, myself and the smokin' Garrett Savluk. It will be a ton of fun. I have to figure out which horn to play ;)
The concert is from 12-1 (and if you're in the area it's free of charge!).
Hope you can check it out. Let me know what you think!
Cheers,

11.20.07 | Monette is no longer for sale, Cleveland with CT Hey everyone! Thank you for your offers...some were extremely tempting (!!) but I just can't let this horn go until I visit Monette's shop. I might upgrade to a Prana 1 or LT but I'm not sure.
I am going to be selling off some horns in the near future. Stay tuned for some updates soon.
On another note I'd love to hang with any Cleveland trumpeters when I'm out playing with the JHO in December. Send me a note through the site and I hope we can hook up. Please make every effort to see CT. He's the MAN!
Best,
T

Now accepting offers until December 1st! Email me directly and make an offer over 7000.
Many more sound clips and pictures coming up soon but check out my website at www.trentaustin.com for sound clips of this great horn. I have many detailed pics of the horn for SERIOUS bidders only.
I found the mpc cure for what ails my lip allergies (thanks to Dr. Dave and Mark Curry for getting me on the right track!) and am selling the Monette.
This is BY far the best Monette trumpet I've ever played. I'm actually not going to accept trades at the time unless we've previously chatted. I want this horn to go to someone who will truly love it. I'll keep it in my collection if I cannot sell it for my asking price (or really fair offer). It comes with the beautiful Monette single gig bag.
I'll put it on ebay if I don't hear back from anyone in this note. If you know of anyone looking for a 993 let them know. This is the best Monette I've ever played, HANDS down. Thanks guys and I hope you're all well!
10.31.07 | Happy Halloween! Halloween in Salem? I'm locking myself in my basement studio and playing extra long tones today :)
It's been a month since the last post so I thought I'd give a little update out there.
The gig with Benny Golson in Cleveland unfortunately got postponed for now. I'm hoping we can reschedule (I've been shedding Stablemates like crazy) for the near future. Another gig in CLE is scheduled for December with CT. woo-hoo!
I have some new leads on steady gigs in the Boston area and will really hope to land some more public dates in the future. Until then you can imagine I'm knee deep in private lessons, private gigs, and recording/mixing/composing for at least two or even three projects I'm working on.
One public performance of note is a memorial concert for one of my mentors and friends Jim Howe, who passed away last month. I hope you all can attend this on November 11th and celebrate the great man's life!
Jazz LIVES (that was his favorite phrase and often closed concerts with that).

09.30.07 | More clips, Coming to Cleveland, etc Howdy everyone!
I haven't updated the news in a bit and thought I'd send a quick note with some updates. I'll be coming back to Cleveland November 6-10 to perform with the legendary Benny Golson. I'll be playing with the great Jazz Heritage Orchestra. If you're in Cleveland and want to hook up send me a note via the contact page!
I also put a new clip from a gig a few weeks ago up. I have a bunch of new clips that should be going up in the next month or so, including many new videos and photos. The site seems to be nearly finished!
Hope that all is well with you and keep on keepin' on!

Every other Monday: Hanover, NH area (Dartmouth College)
Tuesdays: Brookline/Boston
Wednesdays: Salem
Thursdays: U.S.M. (Portland/Gorham, Maine)
Friday: Salem
Use the contact page if your interested!
Next on my agenda is to add many more videos and pictures to the site. If you have any good pics to add send them to trent@trentaustin.com.
Cheers,

09.10.07 | "Testimonial" Page now up and running, email "issues" Howdy everyone!
I've got a running start on the "testimonial" page. Check it out and if you have anything to add send me a note via the "contact" page.
If you have sent me an email or two in the past week or so and I haven't replied please re-send it. The email could be lost due to the slow process of switching servers.
Many thanks again for checking the site!
09.03.07 | Work in Progress, Recording Session #2 tomorrow Thanks for all the kind words about the new site. I'm working hard at fine tuning the site. I've added a bunch of new sound clips, including an "outtake" from my new solo project as well as a clip from a live Miles Davis recording session. I'm still the fence on releasing this. Take a listen and let me know what you think!
Stay tuned for more tweaks and if you haven't yet please sign the guestbook (using the contact page).
Best,
T
08.30.07 | The new Site is under construction! I'm finally updating my old html site (which was nice but hard to update and keep modern). Thanks the portal Dynamod provides it's really easy to do here. Stay tuned for a ton of new information, soundclips, concert listings, promotional materials, etc! If you have any suggestions just let me know.
Thanks for stopping by and keep on keepin' on!
